# Type or dictate a prompt

Enter a request as text or use the microphone in the assistant's message composer.

![AI Assistant message composer with the microphone and send arrow](https://3448227606-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2F-LQ08RFAKZvFADEiXKFy%2Fuploads%2FusPQCS2NlrPq4AkjMWap%2Fai-prompt-composer-2x.png?alt=media)

The microphone is beside the send arrow at the lower right of the composer.

## Type a request

1. Open the relevant chat.
2. Click the message input and describe one task.
3. Include the page, data source, and expected result.
4. Review your wording, then use the send arrow.

## Dictate a request

1. Click the **microphone** beside the message input.
2. Allow microphone access in your browser if prompted.
3. Speak your request clearly, including the page and field names.
4. End dictation using the recording control.
5. Review the resulting text, correct any transcription errors, and send the request.

For example:

> On the Tickets page, show Priority next to Status. Keep the existing sort order.

## Check the result

Confirm the request names the correct fields before sending it. After generation, inspect the changed page.

If the microphone does not work, check browser microphone permission and the selected audio input. You can always type the same request. Spell out unusual table or field names in the text input if dictation mishears them.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.jetadmin.io/ai-app-builder/ai-assistant/type-or-dictate-a-prompt.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
